ECOSALVAGE COMPLETES ITS FIRST MISSION

Ecosalvage, the organisation set up to recover dumped cars from inaccessible areas has successfully completed its first mission. Mac Mackenney and his team of volunteers used their inventive system of jacks, winches and an 'off-road' trolley to recover 17 burnt out dumped cars and 4 motorbikes from beauty spots on the South Downs near Brighton.

Local residents cheered and clapped as some of the rusted hulks were dragged out of the area where they walk and play. Local and national TV and press covered the event, resulting in huge interest around the country.

The two Land Rovers on loan for the project were key to the operation and ensured that the recovery equipment could be transported directly to the sites of the dumped cars. They were then in a position to winch the cars out which were carried on the trolley, then towed to the nearest road and handed over to a conventional recovery firm.

Ordnance Survey maps were essential for pinpointing the location of the dumped cars, with local ramblers and councils providing map references.

With an estimated 7,000 cars dumped in inaccessible parts of the countryside every year, Ecosalvage's next mission is to recover 20 cars thrown over a cliff on the Isle of Sheppey and 11 in a Lincolnshire beauty spot.
